"A healthy dose of old school-classic rock/metal sounds"
by Keely Anne Hill, Writer & Editor
The first time I saw Sour Mash live, I fell for that typical school-boy error of declaring ; "Dude, great set, I picked out the Metallica cover, but who were the other songs by?"; to which modest lead singer, the hirsute Adam Newbery, commented.. "Erm, us...". It is rare that I witness an unsigned set where the original numbers hold their own amongst the odd slotted-in cover , but, with the Newberys' craftsmanship and the overall band sound, these boys are deliciously tight with compositions offering a definite sound that will get your head bobbing, whether you have long hair or not.Sour Mash serve up a healthy dose of old school-classic rock/metal sounds. In a laid-back manner, they manage to slap you in the face with charm and confidence, with an assertive, melodic rock sound that makes me want to raise my Jack Daniels and coke to them. This is a band that does not need to leap manically around the stage in order to grab your attention, their musicianship speaks - no, shouts loudly - for itself.
Thick, chunky, honest guitar riffs, with influences from Metallica and Iron Maiden, these three brothers rock their way through their set with a maturity of music that is often lacking from many unsigned metal bands I have seen, frequently trying to outdo each other in raucous, mis-matched, painful sounding chaos. Their new EP, containing original numbers Open Range, The Last Stand and Hunted is a super debut for this threesome, available to buy now from Amazon, is well worth it if you like a bit of good old hard rocking action, and who wouldn't want that on their iPod?
