"They've written their music with an international audience in mind"
by Martyn Cummings, Writer & Editor
The latest release I've been asked to review comes from Argentine Band Baby Scream. Getting the album to my home was an ordeal in itself due to the Christmas Post, but, A month after the first copy was sent, a second copy hit my door mat and I put it straight into the CD player in my car for the usual 5 days of listening to nothing else and composing my review in my head whilst making the journey to work.I have to say, I was expecting a lot of South American influence, something which to be honest i'm not a great fan of. The Baby Scream album 'secret place' shattered all the South American stereotypes for me. What we have here is possibly ground breaking stuff. There are so many influences I could pick out from the brilliantly penned songs of Juan Pablo Mazzola and the guys. Theres a huge experimental feel to the album with musical and vocal influences from John Lennon through to the white stripes. In fact, Its a wild bubbling melting pot of generations of iconic vocal influences and the musical side to the album ranges from songs you could melt into a comfy chair and chill to and the most foot tapping, in your head sing alongs you could ever imagine. The keyboard seems to be the backbone to the album, Its brilliantly played and compliments Juans 'Lennon like' vocals. A firm favourite for me is the track ' Hit and Run'. It just feels so chilled, anarchic, and perfectly Lennon. The title track 'Secret Place' has such an addictive chorus youll be singing along before you even realise it. That, I believe, is this albums strength. Its a clever album, written by a band with a clever vision. Baby scream have written an album, not for their home audience, but they've written their music with an international audience in mind. My personal opinion is, Its an amazing album with only one grumble from me and that grumble is, The album is far too short. I was left with the feeling that I could have listened to a lot more of Baby Scream before I was left satisfied. So in summary, Great album! Excellent songs! we want more!
