Review: "Pop Goes Punk" volume 5

"They really make this song effortless"

by Daniel Rooney, Live Music Editor

  Volume 5 of "Pop Goes Punk" features many great band such as We came as Romans, Memphis may Fire and Upon this Dawning, covering many pop hits like "Call Me Maybe" by Carly Rae Jepsen, "Grenade" by Bruno Mars, "Billie Jean" by Michael Jackson and "Boyfriend" by Justin Bieber.

The album kicks off with Memphis may Fire playing Bruno Mars's "Grenade", and they really make this song effortless, the vocals stay the same most the until they have a breakdown and the singer screams out the lyrics with such power. The next song is Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" being covered by Upon this Dawning, who make the song their own, but don't change it so much you would think its another song, a mixture of screaming vocals and singing.

The next track is "Somebody That I Used To Know" originally by Gotye and covered by Mayday Parade, overall this is a nice song much like the original, but heavier. The following song is by We came as Romans who cover "Glad You Came" by the Wanted, and the vocals on this song are perfect, the singer does not try to overdo it he keep the vocals the same as the original artist but musical they really bring this song together with some epic guitar playing.

The next song that stands out is Justin Bieber's "Boyfriend" covered by Issues Vocally, this song isn't the best on the album but the music goes so well with this song, and there's some incredible riffs and an epic breakdown.

The last track on the album is Gym Class Heroes's "Ass Back Home" which is covered by Secrets, this song throws you in two ways - one second the song nice and soft - and then it would just go heavy, this track could have been better if it had been just a heavy or soft song.

The top songs to look out for on this album are "Grenade" by Memphis may Fire, "Call Me Maybe" by Upon this Dawning, "Glad You Came" by We came as Romans and "Somebody That I Used" by Mayday Parade, the songs to miss are "Ass Back Home" by Secrets and "Paradise" by Craig Owens.

Checkout the track "Glad You Came" by We came as Romans, enjoy;
