Review: Beat Collector by Velvet Riot

"This is my first test of a bloody good song and they passed with flying colours"

by Keely Anne Hill, Writer & Editor

After listening to Velvet Riot's new single for the first time, I decide that, as I am burning the midnight oil as per usual, I should partake in a small caffeine injection prior to starting my review. As I slop lazily into the kitchen I start humming a tune - yes! - the aptly titled Beat Collector has already clambered into my head and is doing it's business in there, ahem. This is my first test of a bloody good song and Beat Collector has passed with flying colours. Pouring my coffee, I'm mumbling the already acquainted lyrics like they were old friends and, head bopping, I eagerly make my way back to my desk for another listen.

Formally uber-popular local Wolverhampton band The Siege; the now equally anarchic named Velvet Riot treats their fans to a wonderful slice of indie-rock that won't disappoint. Bringing big beats complimented by trippy electronic sounds, front man Joe Carnell's almost ethereal vocals effortlessly fall into the radio-worthy mix of the new single.

Though not as daring or tense as it could be; this band offer you steady, head-bobbing tunes and sometimes - let's face it - that's all you jolly well want. With The Futureheads/Kasabian-esk no-nonsense lyrics and a solid, honest melody, Beat Collector is gloriously accessible. I'm already envisaging this Velvet Riot tune being a favourite at raucous live gigs and lazy-lets-shove-my-iPod-on-shuffle house parties alike. It's indie-rock that you can just get involved in. And you should. Now. Go!

The boys are currently in the studio mixing new tracks as I type, and I sure as hell can't wait to see what Joe Carnall (Vocals), Steve Evans (Guitar), Tom Jones (Bass) and Daz Clark (Drums) serve up next. I will certainly be in the queue to sample their delights - come join me, it's going to be an exciting time for all concerne.
