Houston plays Jordin Sparks' mother, she also takes on the role of Executive Producer, Houston is said to be "honoured" and "humbled" to be involved, and said "I think everybody's going to love this film".
This will be Houstons' first movie since 1996 where she played the main role of Julia Biggs in the movie "The Preacher's Wife".
The plot follows three sisters Ejogo, Sparks and Sumpter who perform in the their Church Choir during the late 1950s in Harlem, the trio eventually go on to become a successful girl group.
Originally the movie was going to star R&B singer Aaliyah, but sadly Aaliyah died on the 25th of August 2001 in a plane crash, aged just 22, it has taken the last 10 years to develop the movie without her.
In an interview with TV Show "Access Hollywood", Houston said "This was Aaliyah's movie. When we brought it to her, she was so Enthusiastic about it and she wanted it, to do it so badly. She was our Sparkle. Unfortunately it just didn't go that way. I put it down. I said, 'My Sparkle has gone to a better place'. Then we just left it alone".
The movie is being Directed by Salim Akil and R&B artist R Kelly will provide the music for the soundtrack.
