Over two thirds of this predicted increase in population will be directly or indirectly linked to migration due to migrants entering the UK and having offspring here. Of the population increase 47% could be down to future migration with 21% coming from the birth of their children in this country. A projected natural increase due to the number of births overtaking that of deaths will account for the remaining 2.8 million, 56%.
By 2015 the government aims to reduce the number of non-EU immigrants from 200,000 to "tens of thousands" by an immigration cap. According to Immigration Minister Damian Green "Immigration to the UK has been too high." Sir Andrew Green, chairman of Migration Watch UK agrees with this "As people return home this evening crammed into public transport and on congested roads, they could well ask where all of these people are going to fit."
