The 39th American Music Award Winners

Winners included Taylor Swift and Adele who both took home 3 awards each

The 39th American Music Awards kicked off on Sunday evening at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, big winners included Taylor Swift and Adele who both took home 3 awards each, with Nicki Minaj picking up 2 awards.

Jennifer Lopez took to the stage with a stunning performance of "Papi" which featured an appearance by American rapper "Pitbull", she also performed "Until It Beats No More" and "On the Floor", on stage were plenty of male and female backing dancers, including Lopez's new boyfriend, 24 year old Casper Smart.

Lopez was criticised afterwards as she seemed to be promoting the Fiat 500 car, which featured in her stage performance, although she did manage to pickup the award for "Favourite Latin Artist award" and told the crowd "It's been up and down and just exciting and overwhelming and so many things".

Other performances came from stars such as Justin Bieber, Maroon 5, Katy Perry, Mary J Blige, Chris Brown, Kelly Clarkson and Enrique Iglesias.

Katy Perry picked up a Special Award for "Female artist with five #1 singles off the same album" - impressive stuff Katy.

21 year old Country Musician Taylor Swift picked up awards for "Artist of the Year" and "Favourite Country Female Artist", her album "Speak Now" picked up "Favourite Country Album", and 23 year old British born Musician Adele picked up "Favourite Adult Contemporary Artist" and "Favourite Pop/Rock Female Artist", her album "21" picked up "Favourite Pop/Rock Album".

Rock band Maroon 5 picked up "Favourite Pop/Rock Band/Duo/Group" and frontman Adam Levine said backstage "We've never won an American Music Award, and it's wonderful to be acknowledged for our music".

Trinidadian born American recording artist Nicki Minaj picked up 2 awards, one for "Favourite Rap/Hip-Hop Artist" and another for her album "Pink Friday" which won "Favourite Rap/Hip-Hop Album", other winners included;

Beyonce - "Favourite Soul/R&B Female Artist"

Rihanna - "Favourite Soul/R&B Album" for her album "Loud"

Foo Fighters - "Favourite Alternative Artist"

Bruno Mars - "Favourite Pop/Rock Male Artist"

Hot Chelle Rae - "Sprint New Artist of the Year"

Blake Shelton - "Favourite Country Male Artist"

Casting Crowns - "Favourite Contemporary Inspirational Artist"
