Songwriter & Folk Musician Jackie Leven passes away

His work often described as a masterpiece

Scottish Born Songwriter and Folk Musician Jackie Leven passed away on Monday night aged 61, after he lost his fight with lung cancer.

Shortly before Jackie died, a statement was put on his website explaining his battle with cancer and revealing "Jackie Leven is gravely ill, suffering from cancer, and, in all candour, has only a few days to live".

Jackie had planned to perform at the Green Hotel in Kinross on Friday night for "Mundell Music", a Tweet from "Mundell Music" said "Sad News - Jackie Leven has passed away. He was a unique talent and was to have played this weekend for Mundell Music".

Born on the 18th June 1950 in Kirkcaldy, Fife, Scotland, the legacy of Jackie has lasted four decades and after starting his career as a Folk Musician in the late 1960s, his success started with a "new wave" band called "Doll by Doll", which was formed by Jakie in 1975, "Doll by Doll" released a total of 5 albums while together, he later went on to record as a solo artist, releasing over 20 albums.

In 1984, Jackie sadly suffered a near strangulation assault, which left him unable to speak for almost 2 years, over those 2 years Jakie became addicted to heroin, but later combated his addiction with the help of his devoted wife Carol.

Although annoyingly Jakie received very little commercial attention, his music was critically acclaimed and his work often described as a masterpiece.

Online Tributes poured in quickly with Twiter being flooded with R.I.P Jackie Leven messages.

Ralph McLean (@RalphMcLeanBBC) of BBC Radio Ulster Tweeted "Jackie leven has died. Another great songwriter gone. Very sad."

David Wrench (@davidwrench) a Musician and Producer Tweeted "My dear friend Jackie Leven died last night. He was a truly incredible man. I can't believe I'll never record that beautiful voice again.

R.I.P Jackie, you were a great man, a great musician and you will be very much missed, an inspiration to us all.
