Philippine floods claim 436 lives

Southern cities of Cagayan de Oro on Mindanao Island and Iligan were hit

Around the world warnings came in urging people not to travel to parts of the Philippines after floods devistated parts of the country claiming around 436 lives. The floods hit land during the night while many were sleeping, with the southern cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan being hit badly. The storm lasted around 12 hours and caused rivers to busrst and substancial landslides, distroying much of these cities.

Gwen Pang, the secretary general at the Philippine Red Cross said that 436 people had been declared dead so far, but this number is expected to rise once other effected areas are investigated further.

The Philippine Red Cross said "Flashfloods triggered by tropical storm Sendong hit Cagayan de Oro City Saturday morning (December 17) affecting some 700 families in 12 barangays, according to initial report reaching Philippine Red Cross Operation Center in Manila".
