NASA's $2.8 Billion Mars Mission is Launched

Even contains a laser which allows it to literally blast a piece of rock apart

NASA has launched the "Atlas 5" rocket in Cape Canaveral, Florida which is on route to the Red Planet "Mars", on board is a Spacecraft housing NASA's new "Rover Robot", nicknamed "Curiosity", which will travel around parts of Mars and investigate past and present life on the planet. This latest Mission is reported to have cost around $2.8 Billion.

The Spacecraft will now travel 354 Million Miles through space towards Mars and the trip is expected to take around eight and a half months. It's expected to investigate Mars for around 2 years.

Hitting the atmosphere of Mars at around 13,000 miles per hour, the Spacecraft will use thrusters to direct itself to the designated landing spot, at around 1,000 miles per hour a parachute will deploy, at about 1 mile from the ground, the parachute is released and thrusters are used, at around 60ft "Curiosity" is finally lowered to the ground using cables.

This is all done in a very "Mission Impossible" style maneuver, something which has never been tried before.

At around 10 ft in length and 900 kg in weight, Curiosity is about the size of a "Mini Cooper", it's packed with Gadgets and Scientific Instruments to help NASA investigate the Red Planet is great detail.

Curiosity even contains a laser which allows it to literally blast a piece of rock apart, this is so the insides of the rock can be investigated for such things as water existence, investigations take part in the on-board laboratory contained inside Curiosity.

Ashwin Vasavada, a Deputy Project Scientist for "Mars Science Laboratory" said "Going layer by layer, we can do the main goal of this mission, which is to search for habitable environment", "Were any of those time periods in early Mars history time periods that could have supported microbial life?".

We wish the NASA team the best of luck and look forward to any news about this amazing Mars Mission.
