The advert titled "Last Dictator Standing" was reported to have cost around $370,000 and was made to advertise Nando's new "6-Pack Meal", forming part of their Christmas Season Campaign on South African TV.
The advert begins with Robert Mugabe waiting for Colonel Gaddafi and friends to turn up for dinner, while he waits, we see him dreaming of fun times with different rulers.
The dream starts off with Robert Mugabe having a water fight with Colonel Gaddafi, who is armed with a Golden Water "Machine" Gun, we then see Robert Mugabe making "Sand Angels" with Saddam Hussein, followed by Robert Mugabe pushing Pieter Botha on a swing. Finally the dream finishes with Robert Mugabe and Idi Amin doing a re-enactment of the famous Titanic Scene by Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio. The advert finishes with Robert Mugabe looking bored and still waiting for Colonel Gaddafi and friends to turn up.
In a slightly longer version of the advert, in a scene just before the "Sand Angels", we see Robert Mugabe and Mao Tse-Tung dancing around on stage whilst singing karaoke songs.
After the advert was withdrawn, Nando's released a statement saying "We've noted with concern the political reaction emanating out of Zimbabwe, including perceived threats against Nando's Zimbabwe's management, staff and customers. Nando's South Africa takes these threats very seriously and will regrettably no longer flight the TV commercial as part of our festive season campaign".
