After being convicted of a serious crime you would expect the guilty party to be stripped of all their creature comforts and privileges but this is clearly not the case for the three Pirate Bay Founders found guilty of copyright infringement in April of 2009.The three men have fought these charges for years but are finally heading to prison after apparently loosing their final round of appeals. Because the case was started years ago the defendants' sentences (which are all less than a year) will likely last only a few months. The Swedish prison they will go to is a so-called "open" prison which has "no fences, and room doors are locked by the prisoners themselves."
The Swedish homogeneous utopia has soft lighting, smooth wood, and modernist cells straight from IKEA. As the Pirate Bay Founders get set to move into a prison that is better than most peoples lives you can be forgiven for believing that if you move to Sweden and commit crimes you'll be treating yourself to a stay in a pleasure palace more chicly decorated than where you came from.
But fear not if you don't fancy a move to Sweden, Scandinavia's justice system offers similar hospitality. Three Israelis jailed in Scandinavia were offered a chance to serve the rest of their sentence in their homeland. They turned the offer down explaining 'here we are treated with steaks, sex and private television airing World Cup games for free'.
