The Beastie Boys, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Donovan, Donna Summer and War who are past nominees have been shortlisted again along with acts Eric B. & Rakim, The Small Faces, The Spinners and The Cure for the honour.
"The 2012 Nominees embody the broad scope of what 'rock & roll' means,' said Joel Peresman, President and CEO of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation. 'From vocal groups to hip-hop, from singer-songwriters to hard rocking artists, this group represents the spirit of what we celebrate at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.'
Hopes are high that if Guns 'N Roses make it in they will put aside their long-standing fued and preform together at the Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony as bands Led Zepplin and The Police have previously done.
Joan Jett, a nominee this year, has been regarded as an icon for women trying to make it in the male-dominated rock and roll world. Jett and the Blackhearts 1981 hit 'I Love Rock and Roll' is to this day still regarded as a rock classic.
Jett's incredible rise into the music industry with her first band The Runaways was made into a film starring Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning.
The successful new members will be inducted on April 14 next year joining last years' inductees Alice Cooper and Tom Waits. Legendary preformers Elvis Presley, The Beatles and Michael Jackson are also past artists inducted into by the The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation who deemed them the most influential artists of their genre.
