British National speed limit set to rise to 90mph

Campaigners believe it will encourage drivers to step it up to 90mph

British motorists are set to have the national speed limit increased from 70mph to 80mph according to government reports, despite opposed reactions from the campaign group "Brake".

Currently the opinion of most motorists is that 80mph is an acceptable speed and the authorities will often allow such speed to go unpunished, but campaigners believe an increased limit will encourage drivers to step it up to 90mph as the accepted speed limit.

Brake's Campaign Director Julie Townsend said "It would be highly immoral to raise motorway speed limits when research indicates it would lead to more deaths and injuries".

But the British government needs to step carefully if they are to continue committing to lowering carbon emissions.
