5 minutes with Calum

"I wanted something to stand out from the crowd, my name was too boring"

Today we welcome a young talent into the interview room, he goes by the name of Calum Longshaw.

Calum, welcome, how are you today?

I'm very well thank you, just woken up from a mid- afternoon nap, thats what you get from a short day at college.

Well it's great to have you here with us. Tell us, what is it you do? What Is your act name?

Well, I play acoustic music mostly, which consists of my own songs and covers. My act name is, 'Whole Lotta Fraser'

A whole Lotta Fraser, how did that name come about?

Honestly? I don't really know, I wanted something to make me stand out from the crowd, and thought my name was too boring. So, with Led Zeppelin's, 'Whole Lotta Love' in my head and my middle name 'Fraser' (which I prefer) I just put the two together. Nothing too exciting really.

Well, I had a listen to wake me up, and your voice is very soothing and relaxing, have you always had your mind set on the acoustic side of music or would you look to branch into different genre's?

I started performing music in an indie band, from school called, 'The Rifts' so I very much explore music other than acoustic. Whether I would branch into different genre's now I don't know, I've grown comfortable being on my own, on stage, with my guitar, maybe I could add a band around me in the future.

What is it about music that you love? What is it that puts a smile on your face?

I love that there seems to be a song for every mood I am in, and that it can accompany me through hard times and never let me down where, maybe, people have.

Your only 17 so you have a bright future infront of you, where would you like to see yourself in a year's time?

I am studying music tech at college and am in my last year, so hopefully I will be at UNI, but other than that I'd love to just get my name recognised a bit more locally, and get a few more gigs because thats where the fun is.

What inspires you when it comes to music? Is it a certain situation in your life? Or maybe a person?

Recently my inspiration has been my girl, with so many thoughts in my head, there's just so much to write.

If you could give some advice to someone who is thinking about taking up music, maybe as a career or as a hobby, what advice could you give them?

Do it! Taking up music was the best thing I have done, the satisfaction you get from writing your own music too is great. However, even if it gets hard keep going, I almost stopped, so glad I didn't.

So what is next for you? Do you have plans for any new singles/albums? Or maybe soon to be announced gigs?

Just keep writing I guess, I want to be totally happy with the material I have before I release anything. But until then I will always be putting demo's up on Reverbnation, Facebook etc. On the gig front I don't have many coming up apart from a short one at, 'The Living Room, 1 Oxford Castle, Oxford' on the 25th of September, but I will surely get some more dates soon.
